Required Documents: The Paperwork Checklist

A complete guide to the specific documents you must gather before booking your visa appointment.

The success of your application depends on having the exact right paperwork. Chinese consulates are strict about documentation standards. Do not assume "close enough" is acceptable.

The University Package

You cannot start your application until you receive these physical documents from your school.

After you are accepted, your university in China will mail you a package. This usually takes 2–4 weeks to arrive via international courier (DHL/FedEx).

1. Admission Notice (录取通知书)

This is the official acceptance letter on university letterhead, stamped with the school's red official seal. It states your name, major, and the duration of your studies.

2. JW201 or JW202 Form (Visa Application for Study in China)

This is a critical government document issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

  • JW201: For students on government scholarships (like the CSC Scholarship).
  • JW202: For self-funded students and exchange students.

⚠️ ORIGINALS REQUIRED

You must possess the Original physical versions of both the Admission Notice and the JW Form.

  • Do not try to apply using only a photocopy or a printed PDF scan (unless your specific Consulate explicitly allows digital submission, which is rare).
  • Do not lose these documents. You will need the originals again when you land in China to register at the university.

Personal Documents

Documents you need to provide yourself.

1. Original Passport

  • Validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended entry date into China.
  • Pages: Must have at least 2 completely blank visa pages.
  • Condition: Cannot be damaged, water-stained, or fraying.

(Only if you are applying in a country where you are not a citizen.) If you are an American applying in the USA, you do not need this. However, if you are a French student applying in London, or an Indian student applying in Dubai, you must provide:

  • A valid visa, residence permit, or other official proof of legal stay in that country.

3. Previous Chinese Visas

If you have been to China before, you must provide a photocopy of your previous Chinese visa and the biographical page of the passport that contained it.

Photo Requirements

China has very specific biometric standards that differ from US or EU passport photos.

You will need one digital version (for the online form) and two physical prints (to bring to the center).

The Specifications

  • Size: 33mm (width) x 48mm (height).
  • Background: Pure white background only.
  • Clothing: You must wear dark-colored clothes. Do not wear a white shirt (it blends into the background).
  • Accessories: No hats. No large jewelry (earrings/necklaces). No thick-rimmed glasses that cover the eyes.
  • Face: Forehead and ears must be clearly visible. Hair must be tucked behind the ears.

💡 PRO TIP

Do not try to crop a selfie. Go to a professional photo shop and ask specifically for "Chinese Visa" dimensions. Most professional shops have the exact template on file.

Bring Extra Photos: Print at least 8-10 copies. You will need them later for:

  1. Visa Application (2 copies)
  2. University Registration (2-3 copies)
  3. Medical Check in China (1 copy)
  4. Residence Permit Application (1 copy)
