Arrival Day Playbook: Your First 24 Hours

A step-by-step survival script for the moment the wheels touch the ground.

You made it. After months of paperwork and an agonizingly long flight, you have landed in China. The first few hours can be overwhelming due to jet lag and the language barrier.

Follow this script to navigate the airport, survive the transport to campus, and settle in safely.

Airport Logistics (The gauntlet)

Do not panic. Just follow the signs.

Step 1: Immigration (Border Control)

  • The Queue: Follow signs for "Foreigners" or "Non-Chinese Nationals."
  • The Documents: Have your "Carry-On Folder" in your hand. You need:
    • Passport with Visa.
    • Original Admission Notice.
    • Original JW202/201 Form.
    • Arrival Card (filled out on the plane).
  • The Interaction: The officer might ask: "Which school?" or "How long?". Keep answers simple. They will scan your face and fingerprints.

Step 2: Baggage & Customs

  • Baggage: Collect your checked bags. Carts are usually free.
  • Customs:
    • You will reach a gate with scanners.
    • Scan the QR Code you generated on the "China Customs" WeChat/Web app before you flew.
    • Put your bags through the X-Ray machine if asked.

Getting to School

The mission: Get yourself and your 2 suitcases to the dorm.

For your first day, do not try to take the subway with 50kg of luggage. It is crowded and exhausting. Take a car.

  • The Official Queue: Follow signs for "Taxi" (出租车). Go to the official line where police/staff are managing the cars.
  • Avoid "Black Cabs": Men in the arrival hall might approach you saying "Taxi? Taxi?". IGNORE THEM. They are illegal drivers who will charge you 5x the price.
  • The Address:
    • CRITICAL: Taxi drivers do not speak English and cannot read English addresses.
    • Action: Show them a screenshot of your University/Dorm name and address in Chinese Characters.
    • Example: "Please take me to Tsinghua University" -> 请带我去清华大学.

Option B: DiDi (Rideshare)

If you successfully set up the DiDi app with your foreign credit card:

  • Follow signs for "E-Hailing" or "Ride App Pickup Zone" (often in a parking garage).
  • Order the car. The app will translate your messages to the driver.

The "First Night" Checklist

You are in your room. Now what?

  1. Check-In:
    • Dorm: Give the front desk your passport. Ask for the WiFi password.
    • Hotel: Same process.
    • Paperwork: Keep the "Registration Form" receipt they give you!
  2. Get Water:
    • Warning: Tap water in China is NOT drinkable. Do not drink from the sink.
    • Action: Go to the convenience store (Lawson/7-11/FamilyMart) downstairs and buy 2 big bottles of water.
  3. Connect to WiFi:
    • Connect your phone. Turn on your VPN.
    • Note: University WiFi often requires a student login you don't have yet. You might need to rely on your Roaming Data/eSIM for the first night.
  4. Message Family:
    • Send a "Safe and Sound" message.
    • Remember: WhatsApp/iMessage might not work without the VPN. If your VPN struggles, call them on WeChat.

You Have Arrived.

Congratulations! You have navigated the bureaucracy, the firewall, and the flight. Get some sleep. Tomorrow, your real adventure begins.
