Packing Strategy: What to Pack (And What to Leave)

Preventing voltage disasters and packing the specific items you won't find in China.

Packing for China requires strategy. You don't need to bring everything—China is the "World's Factory," so most goods are cheaper there. However, due to voltage differences and cultural preferences, some specific items are critical to bring from home.

Voltage & Plugs (The Safety Check)

China runs on 220V. The US runs on 110V. This difference matters.

1. The "Dual Voltage" Rule (Safe)

Most modern digital electronics are Dual Voltage. Look at the tiny text on your charger brick.

  • If it says: INPUT: 100-240V
  • Verdict: SAFE. You do not need a voltage converter. You only need a simple plug adapter.
  • Examples: Laptops (MacBook/Dell), iPhones, iPads, Camera chargers.

2. The "Single Voltage" Danger (Explosion Risk)

Heating appliances and motors are usually Single Voltage.

  • If it says: INPUT: 110V or 120V (and nothing else).
  • Verdict: DANGER. Do not plug this into a Chinese wall. It will spark, smoke, and die immediately.
  • Examples: Hair Dryers, Hair Straighteners, Electric Shavers (older models), PS5/Xbox (check carefully!).
  • Advice: Leave your expensive Dyson hair dryer at home. Buy a Xiaomi one in China for $20.

3. The Plug Shapes

China uses two main socket types:

  • Type A (The "Two-Prong"): Identical to the US two-prong plug. Your US phone charger will plug directly into the wall!
  • Type I (The "Three-Prong"): The "Australian" style slanted pins. You will need a simple plastic adapter for your 3-prong laptop cable.

The "Hard to Find" List

Items that are common in the West but rare or expensive in China.

  1. Deodorant / Antiperspirant:
    • The Reality: Antiperspirant Stick (Old Spice / Dove Stick) is very hard to find in stores. Chinese stores mostly sell weak scented sprays.
    • Action: Bring 3–4 sticks to last the year.
  2. Large Shoes & Clothes:
    • The Reality: If you wear above a US Men’s 10 (EU 44) or US Women’s 9 (EU 40), finding shoes in physical stores is nearly impossible.
    • Action: Bring enough sneakers and dress shoes.
  3. Specific Cosmetics:
    • The Reality: Western makeup brands (Mac, Sephora) are available but more expensive due to import taxes. Foundation shades for darker skin tones are also very rare in local drugstores.
    • Action: Stock up on your specific foundation match and favorite products.
  4. Feminine Hygiene:
    • The Reality: Pads are everywhere. Tampons are rarer and expensive. Menstrual cups are almost non-existent in stores.
    • Action: Bring a supply if you have a preference.

The "Don't Bother" List

Save your luggage space. These are better bought in China.

  1. Rice Cookers / Kitchen Appliances: China makes the best rice cookers in the world. Do not carry a bulky appliance.
  2. Power Strips: US power strips are rated for 110V. If you plug them into 220V, the surge protector might blow. Buy a safe Xiaomi power strip on arrival ($8).
  3. Basic Toiletries: Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Dove, and Colgate are in every convenience store. Don't pack liters of shampoo.
  4. School Supplies: Notebooks, pens, and stationery are incredibly cheap and high quality in China.

Readiness Checklist

The Final Pack:

  • I checked the voltage on my Laptop and Phone charger (reads 100-240V).
  • I removed my 110V Hair Dryer from the bag.
  • I packed a year's supply of Deodorant Stick.
  • I have 1-2 universal travel adapters (for 3-prong plugs).
  • I have comfortable walking shoes (you will walk a lot).
